The  Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) is the Drowning Prevention Charity and the UK’s leading provider of water safety and drowning prevention education. Our trainers are members of the RLSS and we are able to provide trainers / assessors for the following courses.

National Rescue Award for
Swimming Teachers & Coaches (NRASTC)

NRASTC is a supervision and rescue qualification for teachers working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities, such as a swimming lesson. It is suitable for teachers working in a wide range of swimming pools where the water is deeper than the teachers’ standing depth and meets the Individual sites risk assessment.
16 hours minimum guided learning hours

National Rescue Award for
Swimming Teachers & Coaches (NRASTC)

NRASTC LIGHT is a supervision and rescue qualification for teachers working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities, such as a swimming lesson when Lifeguard or First Aid backup is available to respond quickly in the event of emergency. If Lifeguard or First Aid backup is not available the standard NRASTC should be used.

Aquatic Therapy Shallow Pool Rescue Award (ATSPRA)

ATSPRA is a supervision and rescue qualification for therapists, teachers and support staff working on the poolside or in the water during activities such as, aquatic therapy or therapeutic exercise/play. The qualification is suitable for use in shallow pools where the rescuer will not be required to swim to perform a rescue, with water no deeper than the rescuers chest depth.

Emergency Response Pool

The Emergency Response Pool Programme (ER-Pool) is designed for those who have a responsibility to respond to an emergency within the swimming pool environment when the alarm has been raised. The Emergency Responder can be any member of the facility called upon to rescue and provide first aid. Designed for use in small pools no greater than 1.5m in depth such as a health club or hotel pool.

IQL UK Regulated Qualifications

IQL UK is the awarding organisation, regulated by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales, CCEA in Northern Ireland and accredited by SQA Accreditation in Scotland. IQL UK is the trading subsidiary of the RLSS UK.

Through IQL UK, the leading provider of lifeguard training, there are more than 90,000 RLSS UK pool lifeguards trained in the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) and around 95 per cent of all pool lifeguards are trained by the RLSS UK.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (9th Generation)

The IQL Level 2 NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool.

Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification:

  • The Lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool Supervision
  • Intervention and Rescue and Emergency Action Plans
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, AED and First Aid

Every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be 16-years-old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:

  • Jump / dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits

We can offer delivery of training using the Pool Extraction Board (PXB), created in partnership with the RLSS UK and Ferno UK.

Qualification Bolt-Ons

There is the option to obtain additional IQL regulated qualifications during a course, with additional hours of training. These include First Aid at Aid, Emergency First Aid at Work, Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and Management of Anaphylaxis.

First Aid at Work (FAW)

This qualification covers a wide range of CPR and first aid skills, equipping the first-aider to apply first-aid to a range of specific injuries and illness in the workplace.
18 hrs guided learning hours

IQL Level 3 Emergency
First Aid at Work (EFAW)

This enables a first-aider to give emergency first-aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work.


6 hrs guided learning hours
Certification is valid for 3 yrs

IQL Level 2 Course Automated
External Defibrillation

Designed to provide candidates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be able to deal with a casualty suffering from a cardiac arrest, give CPR and use an AED.

1.5 hrs guided learning hours
Certification is valid for 2 yrs

RLSS UK Basic Life Support and the Management of Anaphylaxis - Female first aider supporting a female casualty head

IQL Level 2 Award in BLS & the Management of Anaphylaxis

Provides learners with the knowledge, skills & confidence to deal with a casualty suffering from anaphylactic shock and in need of first aid & medication from an auto-injector.
